ABOUT US AlecBs began after our healthy sense of outrage reached its saturation point. What turned our outrage into rage was the story of former US Marine Tim Thompson and his confrontation with Tennessee's new voter ID law.

When Thompson went to vote in Tennessee's Super-Tuesday primary, he was asked to show his photo ID. To protest the new law -- a law packaged and promoted by ALEC -- Thompson refused.

"I've earned my right to vote. I've used this for 37 years," Thompson said, presenting his voter registration card to the poll worker. "This was good enough for my father, it was good enough for my grandfather. I refuse to show you a picture ID."

The poll worker then tried to hand Thompson a provisional ballot, the type of ballot issued to those who do not present a photo ID. Thompson refused the provisional ballot, reiterating his objection to the law.

Thompson was then asked to leave the polling place.

Reading this was both heartbreaking and maddening. A military man who fought for our country was told the means he and his family had been using to vote for generations was no longer valid.

By protesting this un-American law, Thompson was again fighting for his country. Only this time he was fighting domestic enemies -- enemies who were trying to prevent Americans from exercising the very rights Thompson had fought to defend years before as a Marine.

After reading about Thompson, we uncovered more ALEC-inspired, voting suppression horror stories. There was the former two-term congressman and victim of Tennessee's purge of the voterrolls, who went to vote at his regular polling place and was told by people he grew up with -- folks who lived down the street from him -- that he had been removed from the voting list. They told him he wasn't registered.

Then there was Paul Carroll, an 86-year-old World War II vet, who, after living in the same town in Ohio for four decades was denied his right to vote. Because Carroll no longer drives, he had no state-issued photo ID. When poll workers refused to accept his Vateran Affairs photo ID in lieu of a drivers license, Carroll was denied a ballot. "I went to war for this country, but now I can't vote in this country," said Carroll.

That's what did it, Shock, anger and outrage, which can be great motivators. We're hoping that the spark will help ignite passion for justice in others.

ALEC promoters, such as Limbaugh and other right wing squawkers have all the radio wattage they want; Deep pocketed zillionaires, like the Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson, have TV commercials. But Progressives have bumpers -- lots of them. With our anti-ALEC bumper stickers, we're hoping to cause enough curiosity about this cynical, un-American organization that it will be forced out of the shadows and into the light. When people find out who and what ALEC is, we are confident they will do their very best to get rid of it.
